Show 13) Radio-Active Isotope Project This project, undertaken to the order of Westminster Carpets Pty. Ltd., required the erection of a 24,400 sq. ft. building, an isotope blockhouse with 6 ft. thick walls and roof containing 600 cubic yards of concrete, a stainless steel, concrete encased underground tank to house the isotope source tubes, and an intricate system of instrumentation and automatic controls, including a remotely controlled conveyor and water purification plant. This project represents the first commercial use in Australia of radio-active isotopes for sterilization of raw materials for industry. The basic nuclear section was designed by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Commission, and provision was made for the Melbourne University to operate a research laboratory on the site. Utah specialist engineers acted as design consultants and undertook all civil engineering construction on the project. This cost plus management fee project was started in February of 1959 and completed in January of 1960 at a cost of $246,903. 14) The construction of an office and store for Victa Consolidated Industries in the amount of $61, 707. The firm price and lump sum contract was started in July of 1959 and completed in November of 1959. 15) Astor Center - Steel Frame Factory and Boiler House Plant comprised a steel frame factory and boiler house of approximately 100,000 square feet floor space with a flat Kliplok roof. An entirely new method of roof lighting is provided by fibre glass roof lights in strip form spaced at 6 ft. intervals over the whole area, giving a pleasing diffused lighting effect. The owner of this project is Electronic Industries, Ltd. and it is located at Clayton, Australia. The firm price lump sum contract was started in November of 1959 and completed in October of 1960 for $489,000. 16) Monash University Site Preparation Construction involved clearing and levelling 280 acres of ground for buildings and sports areas, together with drainage and construction of some 750 ft. of road and curbs. Final surface of main area required a finished level accurate to 3/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/2 inch overall - a close tolerance achieved by careful coordination of survey and equipment operating crews, but an operation by no means unusual in Utah's wide experience. This firm price lump sum contract was started in December of 1959 and completed in March of 1960. The cost of the project was $47,505. |
