Show PROJECT RESOLUTION The Toquepela project is located in the extreme southern tip of Peru near the borders of Chile and Bolivia at approximately longitude 71 west and latitude 17° 30' south. This places it more easterly than New York City or at about the same longitude as Boston. The general area is quite remote, nearly uninhabited, barren to to the point of desolation, and extremely arid. Annual rainfall average under 5 inches at the mine and is practically non-existent at elevations below 10,000 ft. Fog and mists afford some moisture to the coastal area during the months of May through September. The climate is consistently mild and temperate. While the ore body lies in the Andes mountains some 60 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of over 11,000 ft. above sea level, the facilities necessary to handle and process the ore into copper metal and to maintain services associated with this activity cover an area from the seaport of Ilo to approximately 100 miles inland, at altitudes ranging from 0 to 15,000 ft. The project as planned and constructed was divided into several areas of operation located at or near Ilo on the coast; Toqaquala, air miles inland at elevations between 8,000 and 12,000 ft; and Lake Suche, inland some 100 air miles at 14,500 ft. elevation. Each of these projects areas consist of one or more main features of construction or operation with the necessary service facilities- to support such operations. In the Ilo AREA were constructeds (l) A pier capable of accomodating ocean-going vessels and port facilities for handling and interim storage of incoming? materials, equipment, and supplies, and export shipment of blister copper ingots. (2) A permanent townsite to house and support families of some 96 supervisory and 372 skilled and unskilled personnel employed at the (3) Smelter and Power Plant located 10 miles north of the port area along the coast; and (4) A coquinn plant also or the coast south of Ilo to supply lime for operational ore process. |
