Show supply haul and construction work in the Sucha area and along the water supply line route, improvement of this road was begun on November 19, 1957. Initial work consisted of partial re-routing, repair, and widening of 54 kms. of the original road between Toquepala and Quebrada Paoalaya, completed in May 1958, followed by construction of 36 kms. of new road between Paoalaya and lake Suche during the last six months of 1958. The entire length of this 90 kilometer road lies between elevations of 12,000 and 15,000 ft, above sea level and constant maintenance was required. During April 1959, a number of corrugated metal culverts were installed to improve side drainage and minimise storm damage. Preparatory to commencing erection of the Coquina Plant south of Ilo, Utah-Emkay constructed a permanent accces road to the area from the Pan-American highway just outside Ilo. This 12 kms. of road now servos also as the truck-haul road for coquina to the railroad loading dock, from where the coquina is transported by rail to the, line turning plant in the Smelter area. This work began on November 27, 1958 and was completed in January 19559. Between January 16, 1959 and February 6, 1959, a 14.5 km. road was roughed out, forming a loop in the public coastal road loading northward from Ilo which henceforth allowed all local Peruvian vehicle traffic to by-pass the smelter and Power Plant area completely. traffic to by-pass the Smelter and Power Plant area completely. In addition to construction, improvement, and maintenance of the above-mentioned permanent and semi-permanent project roads, an estimated 140 kilometers of temporary roads were constructed, serving as access roads for railroad construction, access and maintenance roads for the power transmission lines, and access to the tailings diversion and disposal area. |
