Show In the TOQUEPAIA AREA were constructed: (l) A Staff Village to house and-support families of 275 management and supervisory personnel, at 8,000 ft, elevation; (2) Housing for families of over 1200 Peruvian skilled and unskilled mine and mill laborers, at 10,000 ft.; Nearby, (3) A concentrator with all appurtenant milling facilities, at 10,300 ft.: and (4) Mine shops and service buildings near the ore body, at 11,000 ft. The SUCIE A REA construction included the (l) Water supply line from the hill area to lake Suclie, 40 miles farther inland; (2) An earthfill dam and reservoir to store some l,500,000 cubic meters of water, located 7 miles above the mine; and (3) A floating intake pumping station on Lake Suche. Two other features were constructed which connect the above- mentioned areas: (l) 120 miles of standard gage railroad from the Smelter and Ilo Port areas to the hill area, and (2) A 138 KV elec- trical power transmission line 65 miles in length from the Power Plant in the Smelter area to the hill area. In each of these major construction areas and also in many of the minor outlying areas, it was necessary- for the contractor to construct a system of access roads, temporary housing and camps for personnel, shops and service facilities, required utilities, etc, to permit and facilitate permanent construction activities. And, with construction dispersed over an area roughly 100 miles in length by 10 miles wide or nearly 1000 square miles, logistics thus formed one of the major problems of the project. There follow maps showing the general project location and the general plan of major facilities within the Toquepela area. |
