Show PROJECT PROGRESS DESCRIPTION and CONSTRUCTION SUMMARY INTRODUCTION Representatives of the Utah Construction Company and Southern Peru Copper Corporation met in Denver, Colorado, on April 4, 1956, at which time notice to proceed with construction was given. On April 6, 1956, meetings were held in the New York offices of Southern Peru Copper Corporation to discuss procurement procedure and to initiate purchase of construction equipment. The first trip to Peru by representatives of Cia. Utah Pacific Ltd. y Compania Constructora Emkay del Peru was made April 16, 1956, meeting being held at the project 3ite with the Chief Construction Engineer for Southern Peru Copper Corporation. Arrangements were made for preliminary work to be done by local Peruvian contractors under direction of SPCC on construction of temporary camp and shop facilities at the Ilo port and the mine shops areas. This was followed with a second trip to Peru in May 1956 by project officials to follow up on details of the initial visit and to establish a company office in Lima. The Utah Construction Company opened an area office in Denver, Colorado, on May 21, 1956, using temporary quarters in the SPCC building at 600 Broadway, and on May 28 moved into quarters at 444 Sherman Street. Offices of the Southern Peru Copper Corporation and the architect-engineer, Stearns Roger Mfg. Company, were in the immediate area, facilitating communication between all parties. First expatriate engineering and construction personnel arrived at the jobsite on May 23, 1956; the first shipment of equipment and materials arrived at Ilo, Peru on June 6, 1956, on the Grace Line's Santa Maria out of New York; and the first construction equipment was transported from Ilo to Toquepala June 11, 1956.
