Show TRANSPORTATION AND FREIGHT HANDLING Incoming ocean freight clearing through the port at Ilo during the three plus years of construction totalled 370,000 tons. From June 6, 1956 until October 12, 1957 all unloading was done from ship to lighter to shore using mobile cranes on shore to unload the barges. This method accounted for the initial 161,400 tons off-loaded, freight which included come of the heaviest single equipment item to be received, such as locomotives, cranes, shovels, and tractors. On October 12, 1957 the first ocean-joing vessel, the Santa Olivia, docked at the completed Southern Peru. Copper Corporation pier contracted by Foley Brothers, Inc. Until completion of the railroad connecting the Ilo port with the Smelter and the Toquepala areas in November 1958, distribution of this freight was accomplished solely through truck haul. To perform this prodigious task, the freight transportation section had at its disposal. curing most of the construction period some 26 Mack model 3473-X trucks with dump or flat beds, and 18 assorted Mack tractors for use with the following trailers and tankers: 2 ea. 75 ton lowboy Trailers 3 ea. 50 ton lowboy Trailers 5 ea. 25 ton Hiboy Trailers 4 ea. 10 ton Leland Pole Trailers 1 ea. Refrigerated Van 4 ea. 3,000 Gallon Tankers 6 ea. 4,000 Gallon Tankers 1 ea. 8,000 Gallon Tanker Handling and loading equipment at the port consisted of 3 each 7-ton Clark forklifts, 3 each 5-ton Hysters, 3 each 25-ton Lorain motor crane 3 each P&II 655-A crawler cranes, and a 100-ton Marion crane. Trucked material was off-loaded in the respective work areas with suitable equipment at hand. |
