Show north of the Ilo river towards the smelter. Area site grading for the temporary construction buildings began September 27, 1956, and site grading for the permanent camp proper commenced December 7, 1956. Initial concentrated construction effort was directed toward completion of the Empleado Duplex Apartments and area utilities in order to provide Contractor employee family dwellings as soon as possible. The first of these 22 units was completed by May 1, 1957 and all units were complete and ready for occupancy in late July 1957. Although construction of the original 50 Staff Houses was initiated at this same time, work was purposely retarded in order to divert manpower and materials to more urgently required facilities in this and other areas. The first staff house was completed and occupied in December 1957 and the remaining 49 units followed by June 21, 1958. In October 1953, Southern Peru Copper Corporation authorized construction of an additional 2 houses. These units were completed in the latter part of June 1959. Hospital facilities were completed and placed in operation during December 1953. The skilled, semi-skilled, and laborer housing units were started in October 1957. From March 1958 to November 1958, work was suspended on these facilities in deference to the Owner's wishes and to allaviate a shortage of skilled labor. Final completion of these units and all other remaining facilities in the general camp area was effected on July 23, 1959. 11,700 C. Y. of structural concrete and some 1,175,000 concrete block went into construction of the Smelter Camp facilities. |
