Show 22) Delaware River Dredging This work involved the dredging of a ship channel on the Delaware River for Glascow, Inc., near Glenside, Pennsylvania. This unit price project was started in August of 1959 and completed in September of 1960 at a cost of $3,271,609. It was one of the worst jobs Utah ever had. The project was taken at cost in order to pay for transportation of the dredge "Alameda" to the East Coast. Extreme boulder and ledge rock encountered caused excessive costs, which have partially been relieved by the allowance of a $1, 000, 000 claim for changed conditions. Mr. Frank Peterson was Project Manager for this job. 23) Toquepala Project This project, probably more than any other, exemplifies the many talents inherent in Utah Construction & Mining Co. The general construction contract for Southern Peru Copper Corporation with Utah and Morrison-Knudsen Co. was approved in 1956. The overall construction included the following: 1. The stripping of an open-pit mine with estimated reserves of about 400 million tons of 1% copper ore. 2. Construction of a crushing plant and flotation concentrator, with capacity of 30,000 tpd. 3. Construction of a copper smelter with a productive capacity of 140, 000 short tons of blister copper per year. 4. Construction of a 44,000 kw, oil-fired steam generating plant at the smelter producing 138, 000 v. power for transmission over a 68 mile line from the plant to mine area. 5. Construction of a 110-mile railroad connecting the mill with the smelter and port at Ilo. 6. Construction of access roads connecting mine, mill smelter, port and townsite. 7. Construction of a townsite for skilled workers and laborers at Toquepala to house approximately 1,100 families and also accommodations for 450 single men. The town plaza area included a 50-bed hospital, church, restaurant, public market, recreation center, 20-room school, mercantile store, post office and bank. |
