Show Marriott-Slaterville City History February 2017 Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History February 2017 A snowy January followed by a warm, rainy February blasted snowmelt into the Ogden River at rates not seen in years. Certain stretches of the waterway, trees, park benches and even portions of the Ogden River Parkway, which eventually converges with the Weber River west of Ogden, are fully or partially submerged in water. This weather pattern resulted in flooding in many parts of our city. The next few months when the snowpack in the mountains begins to melt are also a concern - we'll see what happens. Marriott-Slaterville City will have two City Council seats and the Mayor's seat open for election this year. One City Council seat is open in each of the two Election Districts. Those interested in running for a Council seat must file a Declaration of Candidacy, in person, with the City Recorder at the Municipal Building during office hours between June 1^*^ and June 7'^'^. A Nomination Petition may also be filed during the same time period. Filing fees will also apply. The memories of camping in your backyard, gazing up at the starry night sky or looking to the stars while the irrigation waters flood the sweet alfalfa fields are fading. No longer do we see the stars in all their glory blazing over our homes and fields. The natural night sky is our common and universal heritage, yet is rapidly becoming unknown to the newest generations. Electricity and lighting is an essential part of all our lives; however much of our lighting is unnecessary, poorly installed and inefficient. As a result, our community has seen an increase in light pollution, light glare or light trespass and sky glow which creates a curtain to our night sky. This year the Planning Commission will consider a lighting ordinance following recommendations from the International Dark Sky Association which includes: 1. Only turn lights on when needed 2. Illuminate high priority areas only 3. Reduce brightness of illumination 4. Use soft-white, warm-white or filtered LED bulbs 5. Install fully shielded fixtures with bulbs recessed inside (pointing fixture downward).
