Authorities are encouraging people to prepare for spring runoff and flooding this year. Several areas in our city and Weber County experienced some serious flooding the second week in February due to heavy rains which accumulated on top of piles of snow that had not yet melted. This resulted in flooding in several areas because the waters could not drain off. It's been so long since we had a heavy snowpack that people seem to forget what comes with that. Residents have been encouraged to prepare by purchasing flood insurance, having a disaster kit ready with food, water and extra cash so they can evacuate quickly. Residents are also advised to sign up for local emergency alerts through their county, which sends updates to cell phones via text message. |
