This was done in an effort to protect the darkness for research at its Lowell Observatory. This ordinance promoted well-considered lighting without excess illumination and included basic measures like dimming lights, eliminating "daylight" bulbs, directing light downward, and only turned on lights when necessary. Our city is contemplating similar measures to maintain the night sky. A lighting ordinance is now being considered in recognition that many residents have been negatively impacted by excessive ■ghting. The sign ordinance has already been amended to help mitigate such light pollution. The city intents to continue this effort with dark sky lighting on homes and businesses. We urge the residents and businesses of this community to take stewardship of our resources and to help protect the ambiance of our city. The commrmity makes efforts to protect our water, landscapes, and amenities. Light pollutants can also be reduced to help preserve our night skies. Unfortunately, many people are not aware that light pollution is a problem and can be harmful. On foggy nights this last winter we experienced excessive light pollution from commercial developments. You noticed the increased urban "sky-glow" that negatively impacts residential areas. Although the use of outdoor lighting is necessary for safety and utility, some practices interfere with others. The creation of night glare and degraded night-time visuals may ' damage the health and safety of citizens and waste energy. As we see more growth and development in otu city it is important to address the issue of light pollution. There are examples from cities and towns around the United States who have adopted lighting practices to benefit the residents.
