Gaspard, the miser, wants to marry Germaine, his niece, to the Bailli, but this situation does not suit Germaine or Jean Grenicheux, who pretends that he saved her life from drowning. Germaine, to escape, becomes a servant to Henri. The villagers believe that the castle of Corneville is haunted by ghosts. Henri decides to find if this is true and discovers that all this is the work of Gaspard. When the bells of the Chateau ring, Gaspard goes crazy. Serpolette, haughty and proud, finds papers concerning the lost Marchioness, and claims the title. However, Gaspard gains his reason and proves that Germaine is the real Marchioness.
