8B THE OGDEN STANDARD EXAMINER FRIDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 28, 1945 War Humorist Has Place In Series of Lectures The series of nine lectures at Weber college during the fall and winter season promises to be one of the best offered in this territory, it was announced today. Scheduled to include an opening talk by Dr. Ray Olpin, newly elected president of the University of Utah, who is one of the countrys most prominent research scientists, the series will begin in October, date to be announced later. Experience in War Following Dr. Olpin, Colonel Jack Major will take the stage with one of the snappiest lectures available. Colonel Major was sent to the South Pacific as a tonic for the fighting men as a result of his long standing ability to make people laugh. The colonel was raised in Paducah, Ky., where he began his business life by caddying on the links for Irvin S. Cobb, from whom he learned much about the art of tickling funny bones. The colonel has been all over down under. He knows of the humor the boys have, even during battle, and he promises to tell his audience just what the GI thinks about politics, strikes, unions, love and romance. Hell tell about actual Jap battles and what the boys do to relax after battle. Colonel Majors lecture is officially titled, Jeeps, Japs and Jests, but has become nationally known as Fun in a Fox Hole. The date of his lecture will be announced in November. Other Speakers The series will include Carey McWilliams, authority on racial minorities, Dec. 11; Langston Hughes, nationally known Negro Season memberships are on sale from Weber college faculty members.
