Show October 20 continued. James and Palamountain seem to be clean minded and friendly. Study a little French tonight. Have two extra blankets. Hope I don t freeze again tonight. October 21. Sunday. No details given. Work on car from 1000 am until 200 pm. Took walk. Shaved and bathed. Wrote letters home. The Lieut. says cars look fine and everything is fine. French. October 22. Roll Call. Fatigue duty. Work on car. Go to St.Hilane Hospital (syphilis) on duty with Love and Palamountain. Fire for the first time. Read Saturday Evening Post and French. Played pitch. Capacity full 600 patients. October 23. Went to St. Elainne after 1 couche, 3 assis (blesses) (Wounded.) First time under bombardment. A bit nervous. Return and cook our own meal. Stove is one you tuck in fuel at top and rake ashes out the bottom. October 24 No calls. Went through old reserve trenches, graveyard. Took in barbed wire entanglements. Saw flying machine fight and attack on balloon. Train of Marine Guns (camouflaged) October 25 Relieved. Return to La Veuve nothing exciting. October 26. Routine work. Clean staff car. October 27. Go to Chalons for Ravitaillement. (Refueling. Refueling is to provide food and ammunition in the military, food and equipment to the marine and food necessary for sustenance of an individual or a community in the civilian domain.) On duty at Bureau for 24 hours from 3 pm. 26 flying machines go over towards front. Cold and damp. Fog. October 28. Still on duty at Bureau. Am posted as officer of day for tomorrow. Lieut Bingham says we are to be transferred to Set. 20. Told me that he had written letter to Lieut of 30 recommending me, Love and Kemble. Boche (Term used in World War I, often collectively the Boche meaning the Germans. From French slang alboche, from Allemand (German) and caboche (head or cabbage)) machines raid Chalons 400 pm. October 29. Got through as officer of day without trouble. Opinion of men seems to hold good. Didn t mention Conan is minister s son but he can tell a good story and say damn. Lieut was married three days before leaving for France. (Cold fog) (damp) October 30. Routine Feel Bum October 31. Worse so work on car. November 1. Have a terrible cold (sick) cold. Fog and damp. |
