Show December 20. Moved kitchen and dining room. Shaved and put up shelves, books and stove. Bought 6 bottles Champagne, 2 Crme de Mint, 1 Cherry Brandy from soldier (for Christmas). December 21. Worked on car. Town is in fine ruin. Our house is only one with a covered roof in the place. December 22. Took walk around place and some pictures. Nothing left. Quarters are fine. December 23. Stove don t work good. So have changed it. Does fine. Wrote letters. Letter home to Mother Dec. 26, 1917. December 24. (Big Night) Poker Champ. December 25. Police Duty. Served dinner. Carved turkey. (Received a box from Tylers and one from K. Joyce.) December 26. Reserve duty. Trip to Villers La Fosse Vauxerize Montaigne Neuve. Can t see road for snow. December 27. Go to La Turies front post. Post in dug out under an old house. Two calls to Mount Luilly. December 28. Boche put in three shells about 200 yards. 3 French batteries located in woods about 100 yds. Lots of noise. Boche trenches 1 1.8 miles. December 29. Return to Juvigny. Shave. Finish letter home and study French. December 30. Trip to Villers La Fosse. 3 blesses couche. 1 assi. Return Junigny bathe and write letters. December 31. Rustle wood for kitchen. Purchased eats, etc for evening. Wrote home. January 1 1918. Big night last night. Roll call 730 am. Four boys unable to make grade. Shave and bought champagne for dinner. Carved turkeys, went for walk, wrote home and received package from home. January 2. Washed clothes about all day. Went for walk. Studies French and got two packages from home. January 3. Washed more clothes. Trip to Crecy 5 blesses. Received package from Mother Littlefield. Party tonight. January 4. On police duty. Pealed onions, spuds, apples for 34 men. For two meals. Washed dishes and served three meals. Read Penrod (Penrod is a collection of comic sketches by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1914. The book follows the trials and misadventures of Penrod Schofield, an eleven-year-old boy growing up in the pre-World War I Midwestern United States, in a similar vein to Tom Sawyer.) story. |
