Show November 2. Crossed Aisne (Aisne River) ok. Post at Voncq. News of Turkey s fall. Would be big time in camp but haven t any money and nothing to buy if we did. November 3. News comes back that two cars at Voncq have been blown up. Have to go up to get them. The bridge head across the ruin is being shelled and have to run the gauntlet. Strickland (mechanic) and myself. We got across safe and repaired cars (Adams) Buel s car has to be towed. All work being done under fire from Fritz. Shell killed five men repairing road not 25 yards from us. Last 20 minutes under gas and shell. On way back after crossing bridge head find Camionette won t pull Buel s car up the hill. This road has been and is shelled continually for 48 hours, it being only road across. Have to push it up with help of camionette. On arriving at Mery find out that Frenning car is blown up. Driver unhurt. Back in camp. Find True who relieved Buel at Voncq is blown up. Purdy car blown up at 630 pm. Getting pretty tough. November 4. Get True s car and Frenning car and take to park. Getting two cars in return. Day rather quiet. Fritz reported as leaving. Pal sick in bed. Gyp, Frank, Chuck return from leave. November 5. Gyp took Buel to park. I got out weekly report, daily report and made rounds of posts. Very heavy French barrage. November 6. Move our post to St. Vanbourg. Hale goes after food so I have to pilot heavy camion (A large truck designed to carry heavy loads; usually without sides) and kitchen. Unable to cross pontoon bridges on account of weight. So as cook has gone on unheard once I cook lunch at Antigny. Staff car comes back and takes lunch up to boys. I have to go to Mezieres twenty kilometers down the river and wait for the bridge to be finished. After crossing, have to take truck through two kilos of flooded road. No troubles as roads are solid underneath. |
