Love breaks drum on hill. Have extra horses to pull wagons up. Go back to get Love. Fritz still on move. Posts about 20 kilos ahead. Towns stink terrible. November 9. Rumors that we are to be relieved in morning. Kelly breaks drum. November 10. Relieved and move back to St. Lambert. I pilot truck. Looks like peace. Troops though tired sing on march. November 11. Get paper. Glee in camp. Hale goes to Chalons to get champagne. Hale comes back big time. When the official communique arrives (Armistice). (On 11 November an armistice with Germany was signed in a railroad carriage at Compiegne. At 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918; the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month; a ceasefire came into effect. Opposing armies on the Western Front began to withdraw from their positions). November 12. Wash cars and clean barracks. November 13. Sandberg arrives from base camp. Kemble, Miller, Adams, Harris go on permission. Word comes that we advance as Army of Occupation. Put in drum in Kelly s car and one in Harris. Working until 1130 pm. Make out weekly report after. November 14. Move to Montigny la Vence and begin to see returning civils (ordinary citizens). A few prisoners of war, all beg for bread. November 15. Lieut. and self act as cooks. Boys help. No movement. November 16. Get breakfast. French cook arrives from G.B.D. He gets lunch. On move in morning. November 17. Move to Flize. Every bridge out. Railroad blown up. Have barracks in chateau. Trainloads of Boche material in this village. November 18. Move to Carnigan. Met by Mayor and civils. Give us potatoes and vegetables. Give us school for barracks. People clean it up for us. November 19. Hundreds of prisoners and refugees arriving. All beg for bread. French general tells them that in morning bread and meat will be there for all. Band concert. Shower, bath, and bed. November 20. Move to Izel (Belgium) barracked in school. Greetings in every village. |
