Show January 5. On reserve. Villers la Fosse. Coucy le Chateau. (The Chateau de Coucy is a French castle in the commune of Coucy le Chateau Auffrique, in the departement of Aisne, built in the 13th century and renovated by Viollet le Duc in the 19th. In 1917, the German army dynamited the keep and the four towers using 28 tons of explosives.) Ravitaillement to Chavigny. Took out med can Dwisionaire (four striper) to post on Bois de Quincy Landra court. January 6. Duty on Mt. Luilly. Pretty busy from air raid victims. Big snow and rain storm. January 7. Still at Mt. Luilly. French Broncardier (Person involved in the transportation of patients or victims (injured or sick) with a structure of care, disaster or on a battlefield, to the structure of care.) gives me a shave. (Quiet). January 8. Return to Juvigny. Made trip to Villers la Fosse in afternoon. Shaved and studied French puzzles sent out by Red Cross. January 9. Trip to Soissons, (extra) to put in new axle in camionette. (A small truck or bus.) Returned cleaned stove. Made hot chocolate, played 500. January 10. Police duty. Extra. Chopped wood. January 11. Two trips Crecy au Mont. 1 trip to post 2. Wrote letters. January 12. Duty Mt. Luilly (busy) Cave is huge where post is about 200 feet deep 100 feet wide. January 13. Duty Mt. Luilly (quiet). January 14. Start to Juvigny and Boche shells follow. Road clear into Juvigny (quite exciting.) January 15. Shaved and bathed. Packed trunk and duffle bag. Played checkers. January 16. Read letters and wrote home. Feel blue and homesick. Rain and snow all the time. Evening played poker. 12.5 francs to good. January 17. Carried sand for courtyard and went on extra trip to Crecy. Read Penrod and played 500. (500 is a trick-taking card game based on Euchre.) January 18. Worked all day with Kemble on Camionette. Ground valves, etc. January 19. Worked on Camionette and chopped wood. Took bath. January 20. Kitchen duty. Went to Soissons. January 21. Reserve. Rain Snow. No calls. January 22. Reserve and Kitchen two trips. January 23. Duty at post 1, no calls. January 24. Duty at post 1, 1 call (gas) |
