Show October 7. Post advanced one kilometer. All cars working. 5 have no mud guards, sides out and doors gone. October 8. Section 638 comes to relieve us but we have all our cars carrying their men. October 9. Put on reserve with same post. October 10. Advance post to St. Clemont. Terrible battle last night and this morning. Tanks scattered everywhere. Never have seen so many dead men in one place. October 11. Advance post to Camp Schiverin Lager located in woods about 4 kilometers. Fritz is burning everything and what won t burn is being blown up. October 12. Advance to Mt. St. Remy through Canroy and Machault. Dead horse, dead Germans and French clustered in heaps. Telephone and railroad lines cut and blown up. All houses burned and blown up at these places. October 13. Advance post to Ville sur Retourne. Find some houses whole but all mined. Altar of church mined. Wells all blown or filled with refuse. Billeted (lodging for soldiers) for night in old prisoner shack. October 14. Advance to Pauire. Germans evacuating. Counting in front of us. Relief coming up. Expect to be relieved soon. Relieved at 300 pm. Return to Camp Schiverin Lager. October 15. Back to Norway. October 16. To Trepoil. October 17. Left on permission with Hale and Palamountain. Went to Chalon on ravitaillement wagon. Put up at YMCA Hotel in Paris. Reported to Headquarters after having wonderful bath. Stayed all night at Headquarters 21 Rue Gonoran. Place Clichy. October 18. Visited Capt. McFarland and was given permission to go to La Calle Cher to see Theron. Had lunch at YMCA. Hale and Pal took in Boulevards etc. Dinner at YM. Olympia in evening. Pal went to Aux. Jerry and I had room at Y. October 19. Left Paris at Gahr de. Est 815 am. Breakfast at Y. Arrived at St. Armand Cher at 230 pm. Caught 426 train to BruereCher at 230 pm mill bit no Theron. Meet Capt. Wood, who had me taken care of. Dinner with white bread and American jam (strawberry). I decide the war for boys. October 20. Go out to Log Camp where Theron is. |
