Show May 24. Return to O Euilly. Go to bed. May 25. Bed Sick. May 26. Sick, Cold and Fever. Go to sleep at 930 pm. Blown out of bed by German 77 at 100 am. Shell lights 10 feet from where I sleep. Blows up house, big building. Stone at least two feet square where my head was. Adams opposite me wounded in three places. Murphy, James and Pal on duty or would have been killed. Love and Miller on permission so safe. The above beds completely riddled. May 27. Spent rest of last night in cellar. Loaded cars under the worst barrage of war. Houses being blown up all around. James and Romzer return from Post 4 on Lt. cars both blown up. My legs won t hold mercy. Can t hear on account of concussion of the shell. Have to load and drive car out of town. Bridge across river being shelled. Roads full of holes, dead horses, broken wagons and men. Avions (Boche) help us leave town. Pour stream of lead into troops at height of about 200 feet. Trenning and Brooks get through barrage from Post 1. Lose cars. Avions and shells follow us to Fimes. Slaughter terrible. Bombed at Fimes and machine gun fire continually until 300 pm when we are to leave. James loses other car, badly wounded by bomb. Avion slaughter British by hundreds. Horses fall in road, difficult driving and I am awful weak. Nothing to eat yet. Stop at Gravigny. Get something to eat. May 28. Get some sleep. Murphy, Wright, Brooks A. Thorpe missing. 9 cars lost. Report that not over 200 men left out of any regiment still in lines. Fall back to La Fere. Driving yet but awful sick. |
