Show May 10. Went on bike to lake after swim. Bought puttees (A puttee, also spelled puttie, is the name, adapted from the Hindi patti, bandage (Skr. patta, strip of cloth), for a covering for the lower part of the leg from the ankle to the knee, consisting of a long narrow piece of cloth wound tightly and spirally round the leg, and serving both as a support and protection, worn especially by riders, and taking the place of the leather or cloth gaiter. It was once adopted as part of the uniform of foot and mounted soldiers in several armies, including the United States Army and the armies of the British Commonwealth) and tie. Went to show at night. Played games. Met sister of King Albert of Belgium. (King of Belgium from 1909 1934) May 11. Went to Abby across Lake. Took picnic lunch and rowed over. Took swim. Storm caught us on way back. Rain hard time getting to shore. Show at Casino at night. May 12. Sunday. Wrote letters. Went to lunch at hotel. Pleasant with Mr. Weil. Countess bows to me as I pass her table. Everybody looks. Had a big audience on veranda. May 13. Bath. Went to Chamberry, Visit House of Savoie, King of Italy Line, Museum and famous Cathedral. May 14. Rain. Study French and write letters. May 15. Boat ride on lake after swim. Theater party with Weil, King Albert s sister (Countess Vendome) guest of honor. National aris, etc. Gyp has sprained knee and can t walk. Has to stay in bed. May 16. Stay at hotel during day. Pick up few words of French. Go to show at night. May 17. Pack up to leave. Gyp can t go. Leave at 530 pm for Paris. Big crowd to see us leave. May 18. Arrive Paris 800 am. (Sit up all night) slight cold. Hotel Continental. Breakfast and bath. Take films to Kodak. Report to Headquarters. Lunch De la Paix. Olympia at night. (Paris Olympia is a music hall at 28, Blvd. des Capucines, in the 9th arrondissement Paris, France. Beyond musicians, the Olympia played host to a variety of entertainment including circuses, ballets, and operettas). May 19. Out Paris 950 am for Vierzy. Bad cold. Spend day and find there is nothing to sleep in or on for night. May 20. Leave Vierzy for O Euilly at 630 am. Arrive 100 pm. Spend rest of day in bed. May 21. In bed and sick. May 22. Post at Verneuil Busy. May 23. Post and busy. Awful sick. |
