Show January 25. Trunks must leave. Bed roll, barrack bag limit. Appear in full dress for roll call. Uncle Sam taking hold. Screw begins to tighten. January 26. Wright returns from Nice with roulette wheel to trim crowd with. Trunks leave. January 27. McDougal receives phonograph. It s busy all day. January 28. Go to La Turies. Busy (gas). January 29. Boche aviator gets French observation balloon and French aviator gets Boche (quiet). January 30. Return to Juvigny Quiet. January 31. Very quiet. Hot chocolate and read. February 1. French Corps de Main, out to post (La Turies) as extra car. Post full of Brancardiers, dogs, smell and noise from outside and in. No sleep and no trips. February 2. Return to Juvigny. Boche try for balloon, which is in town. Use shrapnel so have to quit our game of quoits (a traditional lawn game involving the throwing of a metal or rubber ring over a set distance to land over a pin (called a hob or mott) in the centre of a patch of clay) as shrapnel falls in court yard. February 3. Town shelled for two hours trying for French artillery which passes through town. February 4. American troops arrive. Are to train in this sector. Are the 101 Engrs, which came over on Andania with me. Yankee division. February 5. Kitchen police. Do some washing. February 6. Work on car. Artillery very active. February 7. 101 Engrs give band concert. Seven new men arriving to fill up section. Can t drive cars. February 8. Boche Avions over our lines all day. February 9. American troops came through Juvigny (artillery) Boche put in shells, me for an abri. (Shelter, refuge) Blow up new men s barracks. February 10. Searching for Coman who gets lost going to post. Tries new route and loses part of carburetor. |
