Pack for permission. September 18. Start on permission at 1000 am. 1130 called out of train to return to section as we had orders to move. Out of Brusson at 930pm. La Chaussee 1040 pm. September 19. Played baseball. Fished in afternoon. Left at 730 pm and arrived at Courtisols at 930 pm. While truck gets in ditch. Bed at 100 am. September 20. Coman evacuated. Moved to Camp Noblette. Arrive 12 midnight. Slept in cars. September 21. Played game ball. 8 cars left at midnight to take men to see American Egnrs build bridges at Toul. September 22. Still at Noblette. Go to park with Lieut. September 23. Still at Noblette. Shelled all day. September 24. Order at 800 pm to move to Camp Poggie. Road crowded both ways. Road shelled all the way. 6 kilometers. 3 hours drive. Fine abri. September 25. Medcan division puts us out of abri. Find another. Shells coming in all the time. 11 pm. on guard for gas. Barrage opens up at 1100 pm. September 26. 500 am barrage stops. Front post at Souain pretty hot. Hale gassed. Camionette blown up. September 27. Post in First German trench. Fritz counters at noon. French at 430 pm. September 28. Post advanced. Second line trench. September 29. Post advanced to German abri. September 30. Back to Poggie on reserve. Relieved by 623. Have to help 623 with 6 cars. October 1. Reserve. Repair cars. Bodies full of eclat holes. October 2. Back to Camp Noblette. Gyp and I get breakfast at American camp, Marines. October 3. 700 am back to Poggie to get in to lines in morning. October 4. Go in to line. Post at Somme by ground looks like boiling mush. Dead still unburied. Hale returns ok. October 5. Post moved to St. Marie a py. Terrible sights. No sleep now for 52 hours. October 6. Post advanced forward. We can see French and Boche fight St. Pierre. Kitchen comes up. Shell our place until we have to move it out. Have to sleep in open. No trenches. Too hot as we dig in. Wonderful to watch the barrages but terrible noisy. |
