Still working on cars. Have two posts yet Mery and Montiers. Division is relieved. Still hold in reserve. More sleep. April 2. Still working on cars. Sleep. April 3. Leave for Venette. Sleep in house and have boiled eggs. April 4. Vic sur Aisne. English troops coming up. April 5. Sleep in cars in street. Wash cars. April 6. Bombed. Women and kids killed. Kimball breaks out. Go and pull him in. April 7. Roll Call 1100 am. Have hot chocolate in bureau. Get cigarettes (3) from Red Cross. April 8. Quiet. Gen Raymond inspects my car. Guy and I have our beds made up in it. Rain. April 9. Cut Murphy and Gyps hair. Cut Woods hair. Bombed. April 10. Cut James, Palamountain and Masterson s hair. Shave. Cut Love s hair. To move to Sermoise at 630 pm. Pitch dark. Sermoise to Brainse. Sleep in car in street. April 11. Notified by Lieut Richmond that I am to have Croix de Guerre. Big punch bowl. Have to buy champagne for boys. April 12. Telegraph home. Presentation for G.B.D. at 1000 am. French Lieut congratulates me and thanks me in name of French for my bravery and devotion. Airplanes raid us until midnight. Hell of a time. Drill first time. |
