Show September 22 continued friend of the Kimballs Feel Foolish. Some drive to the station when Mrs and Mr K. have recovered my grip and returned the one I had. Made train on the run. Would love to have met Mr. K. hope to sometime. Train is two hours late into N.Y. September 23 Scofield and I go to Hotel Knickbacker. Scofield is to meet me here in morning. Have fine room Walked up Broadway wrote letter home Bath and Bed. September 24 Have breakfast at 7 am. Return to Hotel Taxi to A.F.S. and report Outfitted, my passport has not arrived (Wire sent), return message says it will arrive in morning. Return to Hotel Scofield and I have dinner and get tickets to show For the Love of Mike. (The story is a comedy drama and tells the tale of three old cronies, a German, a Jew and an Irishman, who adopt a waif and go through much misery, All for the Love of Mike, from which the picture gets its title. The time jumps 20 years during the picture, and shows young Mike in college, where he proceeds to acquire the swell head, and refuses to acknowledge his fosterparents, which leads to the Irishman giving him a sound thrashing in front of the boys best friends. One thing leads to another, and the climax comes when the boy makes a thrilling finish to a boat race that he is supposed to have thrown. The three cronies come to the front and take care of a group of gamblers who had been leading the lad astray.) Fine show. Orders to report for sailing tomorrow. September 25 After Breakfast looked up passport, Had picture taken. Passport arrives. Receive General Orders 10 am., Take passport to French Counsul Vised in twelve minutes. Take it to British one hour and five minutes. Boat sails at 3 pm. Bought steamer ticket, now 110pm. Lunch Hotel Taxi to Pier 54 14th Street. Pass guard and get things in cabin. Met a Littlefield from Providence (101st Engrs.) (Tank Master Engr.) Not sailing at 300 about five troop ships here loaded. This ship Andania. (The Andania was built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company to cater to second and third class passengers. In 1914, it was requisitioned as a troopship for Canada. In 1917 it carried 108 officers and 1,745 enlisted men from New York to the Liverpool. On January 28, 1918 the ship was torpedoed by a German U boat and sunk.) September 26 Ship is casting off 700 am. Clear sky not allowed above deck until we are clear of land. Rumor bound for Halifax to meet convoy. Statue of Liberty past and clear of harbor. Have had 3 good meals. Ready for bed Bad cold 9 pm September 27 Up at 630 weather clear. Bath. Breakfast. Take off uniform. Sight first whales at 1030 am ship time. Take off uniform as the soldiers salute us and officers are confused as to our standing. 1700 privates, 260 officers. Have a band. Take two doses of serum. To bed 900 pm. September 28 Between serum and keeping port holes closed had terrible night headache, chills, and fever. Arm terribly sore and swollen. Sight two ships arrive Halifax Salute Belgian Eng. Canadian, French Flags. Bed 700 pm. September 29 Cooling ship and taking on coal and fresh water. Ships for convoy coming in slowly. Looks like two day job. No mail allowed to go. No one allowed ashore. Surprise out Halifax 430 pm. Fair weather. Feel better. |
