Show September 30 Rained all night. Seven ships in convoy now. Rough seas slow travel account zig zag and two slow ships. Start studying French. Give talk on motors. Fredrick Brinkerhoff Duncan Roommate, Exercise on submarine watch at 300 pm. Have music at meals. Sea still rough. October 1 Bath Breakfast Feel need of outside atmosphere. Waves up to port holes. Rain and fog. French class, Exercise A Deck. October 2 Bath Breakfast Heavy sea Classes. Meals and I are just fighting for supremacy all the time. I am on top to date. October 3 Just the same as yesterday. October 4 Still storming Holding my own with a great deal of difficulty. Lose ships in storm October 5 Life boat drills. One ship passes. Very exciting October 6 Pick up lost ships. Reform convoy very interesting. Have races around deck. October 7 Steward says big price on Captain s head This ship was at Tripoli. Have a big variety of life boats. Castenia Lusitania only two boats of her own. The others from boats which have been sunk. Two steamers pass. October 8 One steamer and one three mast sail boat pass. Target practice. Have an aux gunboat and all ships are armed. (Get a few pictures) Orders to soldiers who are all armed and to sub watch fire at anything that looks like sub. Tell us that we may pick up destroyers in morning. October 9 Still at sea. Fog and rain. No destroyers yet, but no subs either. Destroyers arrive 1 pm. Orders to sleep with clothes and life belt on. See land South shore of Ireland. We unexpectedly take lead. Liverpool at 800 pm. Take cab to Adelphia Hotel. Out to look around. Bed. October 10 Report to police station. Rush back to Hotel and then to RR station. Given private car to London. Take us for officers. Go to Imperial Hotel bum staff. Change to Russell Square Hotel. Go to show called The Better Ole (British stage play that in turn was inspired by a series of cartoon sketches created by Capt. Bruce Bairns father as he served at the front. (An earlier film version was made in England in 1919.) Chaplin plays Old Bill, a happy go lucky British Army sergeant who suspects that an officer in his regiment is actually a German spy. The comic complications that ensue include Bills posing as a German soldier and facing a firing squad when its thought that he is himself a spy. The movies title comes from Bills pet saying, If you know of a better ole (foxhole), go find it!) great stuff. October 11 Report to Police. Report to American Counsul and then French. Leave Friday for Le Havre, France. (City in northwestern France situated on the right bank of the mouth of the Seine River as it outlets into the Bay of the Seine in the English Channel.) Take ride around town. Cold and damp. |
