October 16 Routine, Downtown Visit Eiffel Tower, Napoleon s Tomb, Invaladies, Royal Tombs, Joan of Arc Statue, Evening go to show Come Along (A musical set in New York City and Alsace, France in 1917.) Bed 1130 pm October 17 Detail, Clean Barracks. Orders to join Section 18 tomorrow. 10 am for train. Given afternoon to get what we wish. Bought a cigarette lighter. Had dinner at De La Parix, coffee at Pausset. Crawford and Murphy ask to go to 18 with me. Both fine lads, so we three will leave together. Bed 1000 pm October 18 Packed things and left Paris for Chalons sur Marne at 1200 noon. (Raining) arrived at Chalons 3pm met at station by French corporal. Arrived barracks 430 pm. Given good arrival, Big Hospital (La Veuve) capacity 3,000. Dinner 530 pm. Cabbage soup, bread, coffee, pinard and jam. Bed 930 pm. Almost frozen. October 19 Roll Call 730 am, Breakfast 800 am, Police Barracks 830900 am., work on cars 91200. Lunch. Work on cars 100300 pm, Bath 400 pm, Tea 430pm, work on cars (if necessary) 600 Dinner, Lights out 930 pm October 20 Cleaned my car yesterday so Love and I cleaned staff car today. Will give my opinion of the men as far as I know them. Love regular and full of pep. Magnus a rustler but quiet. Kemble, good scout. (think I ll like him) Les Cognats, Southern gentleman, noisy and boozy. Johnson, Cutler, Corcoran, Peirce college types (cultured and lazy) Guess Wright might be put in this class also, but hold out hope for him. Miller says Sir every time you speak to him.
