Show March 20 Continued. Hale, Love, Miller, Crawford, Coman and myself dinner at Cafe de la Paix. Bed after Follies. March 21. Stay at Hotel Continental. Breakfast at 930 am. Go shopping for Wattis. Dinner at Cafe Marguerite. Leave Paris 800 pm for Aux Les Beurs. March 22. Arrive 830 am. Had to sit up all night. Breakfast Hotel Du Nord opposite Casino. Take in town in buggy. To bed at 900 pm. Orders to leave for front on 1000 pm train. Train leaves 1005 pm. March 23. Arrive Paris from Aux. Stay at Hotel de Est. Sat up all last night. Lunch at hotel. (Take nap) Dinner at Marguerite. Take bath. Up for train at 500 am. March 24. Train leaves at 720 am. Arrive at Montdidier at 1200. Camionette meets us at station. Boche prisioners coming in. Tilloloy 110 sent to duty at Billancourt. Driven out with machine gun fire. Coman and McDougal have close calls. New post Rethonvillers driven out by machine guns. British retreating. Our division holding with bayonets. Ammunition coming up. Fall back to Roye. Driven out at 530 am. Fall back to Tilloloy. Trips to Hargicourt. March 25. Try Hargicourt in attempt to get to Tilloloy to join section. German shell road with 250s. Get to French trenches and run into boche small gun fire. Can t make the road. Turn around. Run, shell fire for three miles. Pick up wounded on road. Main post established at Courcelles past about Piennes. Assinvillers. Road dangerous from guns, fire, camions troops. No sleep yet. March 26. Driven out of Montdidier. Evacuate Tricot, Piennes gone. Assinvillers also. Post now Onvillers. Hanviller. Shelling is terrible. Buildings fall down. Get nap on seat of car. March 27. Driven out of Onvillers and Hanviller. New posts Rollot and Mortimer. Counter attack Hanviller retaken. Men all lost but me. Holding 3 posts. Roads almost all blown to pieces. |
