Show March 27 Continued. 530 am met boys and took them back to section. 13 hours on duty along holding down 3 posts under terrible road fire. Fell asleep on trip to Rollot. Fell off chair on face. Eye slightly blackened. Hanviller given up again. Still getting my wounded to Ressons. March 28. Still holding Rollot and Mortimer. Just a mass of stone and debris now. On duty at Mortimer. 155 battery across street from post. Shake building. All windows out. Door off. Go to sleep on floor. 3 hours sleep. New division and section come to relieve us. March 29. Driven out Mortimer by machine gun fire. Driven out of Courcelles by machine gun fire. Established post at sugar mill. Courcelles retaken. Myself and True sent back to Courcelles. Infantry fall back behind us. Pretty hot. Bullets (machine) tearing things up. Get load. Hell s broke loose. German barrage. Armoured cars up and pass us to protect roads as Infantry can dig in. 30 minutes of tension. Four men hit outside. Go out and get them in to shelter. Doctor dresses them. Ready to start. Just get out ahead of armored cars. Machine guns everywhere. Tension terrible. Regiment of reserves just arrived. Also mounted men. Won t take my blesses at Ressons. Eslie St. Denis full. Have to go on to Beauvois. Arrive and deliver blesses. 60 kilometers gas gives out. March 30. Can t get any gas. Found American ford broken down. Promised gas if I fix it. Get 5 liters for the job. Oil low. Haven t any map. Section is Can t go any further. Gas gone. Oil too low to take chance. English Camion train comes by get 2 gals gas and 2 qts oil. Get to Eslie St. Denis. American section working at hospital and fix me up. Find section at Moyenneville all ready to go to Neufy. Reverse |
