Show October 20 Continued. Rather surprised to see me. Have chat. Meet fellows and go out in woods. Glad I didn t join Engineers. Too much work and no glory. October 21, 22, 23, 24. Just visit and go to St. Armand. All the white bread and jam I can eat. October 25. Theron and I go to Bourges. Theron can t go back with me so Capt. says we see the Major who gives Theron leave. Major and I have long talk. We leave on 300 am train by getting station master (French) to stamp papers, after French Headquarters refuses. October 26. Arrive Paris at 1100 am after all night on train and in station at Orleans. Lunch at YM. Look over town and take taxi ride to 21 Rue de Hospital. Dinner at YM. Take in Boulevards by night. Bed and wonderful sleep. Have pictures taken in town. October 27. Go to depot about 525. Train to Chalons. Arrive Chalons 1200 pm. Sleep in depot on bench until 4 pm. French soldiers. Hot chocolate and bread. Tried to find hotel when we arrived but it was so late and dark couldn t. October 28. After hours of walking and walking. Find Hale and Kemble who are in town for provisions. Get out of town at 1230 pm. Theron enjoys going through from Souain where we previously attack to Drecourt where section is in line with troops. Gets German souvenirs from Boche prisoners coming out. Arrive section almost dark. Sleep in Hole for night. October 29. Theron goes to advance post with Lieut. Gets more souvenirs. We move into barracks. October 30. Had to take to Abri last night as Fritz bombarded us. Think Theron is enjoying his leave. October 31. Theron leaves this morning. Has gunny sack of souvenirs and says he has had enough of war. Beebe leaves for school. November 1. We attack this morning at 530. Left barracks 430 when to St. Voubourg. Have posts at Mery, Veau. We are to cross barrage. Hardly any return except gas, lasts two hours. Casualties are light. |
