Show Pioneer Utahn, Leader in Civic Affairs, Is Dead Mrs. Eunice Wattis Bowman, 84, of 2575 Jefferson, widow of Archie Bowman and a pioneer resident of Utah, died early this morning of causes incident to age. Long active in club and civic affairs, Mrs. Bowman had resided in the Ogden area most of her life. Born in Mountain Green, Morgan county, Jan. 31, 1861, she was the daughter of Edmund and Mary Jane Corey Wattis. Her early life was spent in Uintah. She taught school at Mountain Green, Uintah, Hooper and Riverdale prior to her marriage on Feb. 17, 1882, to Archie Bowman, who was for many years general superintendent for the Utah Construction Co. He died in 1930. Appointed a member of the Utah state industrial school board of trustees in 1921, she was the first woman to become a member of that board. Assists Children Mrs. Bowman had been a member of the Child Culture club and of the Childrens Aid society since 1911 and had served as president of both organizations. For 15 years she was chairman of the homefinding committee of the Childrens Aid society, during which time she was instrumental in placing more than 150 orphaned or otherwise unfortunate children in foster homes. In 1907 she became a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a charter member of Miriam chapter of Ogden. At one time a member of the board of directors of the Utah State Federation of Womens clubs, she also served several terms as state chairman of its child welfare committee. Mrs. Bowman was a charter member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood and at one time served as state president of the Degree of Honor Review, an early fraternal organization. Utah, the Pioneer State, a poem commemorating the achievements of the states early settlers, which she composed in 1916, won for her an honorary membership in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Family Members Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Herman B. Way, Houston, Texas, and three sons, Archie W. Bowman, Twin Falls, Idaho; Leslie E. Bowman, Heyburn. Idaho, and Will W. Bowman, Salt Lake City. A sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Fretwell of Ogden, and two grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Bowman was a sister of W. H. Wattis, E. O. Wattis and W. L. Wattis, noted western builders of railroads, highways and dams, who founded the Utah Construction Co. Funeral arrangements are being made by the mortuary at 529 Twenty fifth street. |
