Show assignments will be at the grade level at which the student de-sires to be employed later as a teacher. In general, the student teaching course will be taken during either the fall or winter quarter of the Senior year. However, some students will be permitted to take it during the spring quarter of the Junior year. Secondary School Teachers The student preparing to teach in either the junior or senior high schools will spend considerable time in both professional coursework and academic specialization. He may choose, therefore, whether he will graduate in the Division of Education or in the division which provides his academic major. To graduate in the former, he will need to complete at least six credit hours of work in professional education beyond the 33 hours required for certification. In completing the work for the academic major and minor, advisement will be obtained from the departments offering them. Advisement in completing the professional courses, and relative to certification, will be provided by the Division of Education. Required courses in professional education total 33 credit hours. It is recommended these courses be taken in the following sequence: Education: 111, 101, 104, 141, 156, 157, 161, 112, 102. An academic major of at least 40 credit hours and an academic minor of not less than 20 credit hours are required of the secondary teacher candidate. These must be in subjects taught in the secondary schools. Courses required for completing the majors and minors are listed by the respective departments in which the majors and minors are offered. The fields from which the teaching majors and minors may be chosen are as follows: Majors or Minors Minors only Business Education Mathematics Anthropology English Physics Philosophy Speech & Drama Physical Education Geography Art Sociology Library Science Music History Botany Political Science Zoology Psychology Chemistry Composite Major: Biological Science Science and Mathematics Social Science Student teaching ordinarily will be taken during the autumn or winter quarter of the student's senior year. Some students will be permitted to take it during the spring term of the junior year. During the quarter selected, the student's time will be taken entirely by student teaching and related professional courses. Actual teaching will cover a period of seven to eight weeks, full time, and will provide the student with experience in both his major and minor fields under the direction of more than one teacher.
