Placement TestsBefore registration, all new students except those presenting acceptable college credit in Basic Communications must take an English placement test as a part of the College entrance examinations. Basic CommunicationsAll students contemplating baccalaureate degrees must take Basic Communications 1, 2, and 3, in sequence, preferably during the Freshman year. Students falling below departmental requirements on the English placement test must pass English 001 (non-transfer credit) with a grade of "C" or better before starting the Basic Communications sequence. Upper placement level students may be enrolled in special sections of Basic Communications 1, 2, and 3. Students failing college reading requirements must take English 004. Students showing marked inability to listen effectively to oral communication may be required to take English 006. Baccalaureate Degree Requirements English MajorStudents planning to take B.A. degrees must complete from 45 to 60 quarter hours of satisfactory work in English language and literature with a minimum of 30 hours in upper division and 15 in lower. These students must also complete 25 hours in one foreign language provided they do not have the high school equivalent (two full years of high school language is equivalent to 15 quarter hours of college work). The following courses are required of all English Majors: English 100, 150, 151, 164, 165, 166. The following courses are strongly recommended by the Department: English 160, 170, 173, 180. English MinorStudents planning to minor in English must take English 88, 89, and 90 during the Freshman or Sophomore years, English 100 and 127, preferably during Sophomore year, and English 166 during the Junior or Senior year.
