Basic Food PreparationSelection, preparation, and buying of food for the family. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 11. Family MealsPractical experience in planning and preparing meals for the family. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 12. Foods for Special OccasionsPreparation of attractive, unusual, dishes especially suitable for guests and parties; some emphasis on foreign foods. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 13. Nutrition and Family Health Importance of food and its relationship to good health and successful living; demonstration of preparation techniques and discussion related to weight control. (1). 17. Clothing Construction Clothing construction techniques, pattern and fabric selections suitable for the individual needs. (1). 18. Consumer Problems in Clothing and Household Tex-tilesSelection, care, and use of fabrics from a consumer point of view. (1). 19. TailoringCustom tailoring techniques applied to construction of coats and suits. 20. Decorative ConstructionSkills for making draperies, pillows, bedspreads and other articles for the home. Demonstration of technique of slipcovering and refinishing. (1). 21. KnittingIndividual instruction in the basic knitting skills, such as stitch, design, blocking (sweaters, dress, stole, etc.). (1). MillineryTechniques in design and construction of millinery. (1). 30. Upholstery Elementary operations of webbing, springing, stuffing, and upholstery of footstools, ottomans, and chairs. Student works on his own articles using his own materials. One 3-hour laboratory period a week. (1). 31. Rug MakingNew techniques of braiding and joining rugs. Emphasis on color, selection of design, shape, and material. (1). 032. Home Furnishing and DecorationPrinciples of art in the furnishing of the home and in selecting colors, carpets, window decoration, furniture, and accessories. (1). 40. Family Relationships Interpersonal relationships within the family; discussion of basic needs, values, goals, and patterns of behavior. (1). 41. Education for Marriage and Family Living Designed to help men and women understand attitudes and relationships in marriage and to develop an appreciation for enriched family life. Includes a study of personality and successful adjustments in marriage. (1). Child GuidanceGrowth and development of the child and his relationships with his family, peers, and teachers from in-fancy through adolescence. (1). Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences The Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences offers courses in the departments of General Education for Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Geology and Geography, Engineering Mathematics, Pre-Architecture and Architectural Technology, Photography, and Physics. Many courses listed in this Division will be taught in the Evening School, and in addition, the following courses may be offered: GEOLOGY Courses of Instruction 61. GemologyPhysical and other properties of the minerals and rocks used as gems in jewelry or decorative pieces. (4). 62. Mineralogy for ProspectorsA course designed to acquaint prospectors, miners, hunters, and hikers with common ore minerals and their associated gangue minerals. Emphasis on simple physical and chemical tests for the identification of these minerals and on their mode of occurrence. (2). 120. Stratigraphy and SedimentationOrigin and inter-relationships of important rock units. Prerequisite: Geology 1 or 11, and 3. (5). 160. Economic GeologyOccurrence and origin of mineral deposits, both metallic and non-metallic, and the geologic principles involved. Prerequisite: Geology 1 or 11. (5). 170. Ground WaterOrigin, occurrence, behavior, and use of underground water, with special emphasis on practical applications in Utah. Prerequisite: Geology 1 or 11. (5). |
