The steel industry in Western Europe is increasing its capacity and has almost doubled its use of imported iron ore in the last five years. The Japanese are planning on trebling their pig iron production by 1970 and this will require the importation of four times the present volume of iron ore. The development of the large specialized ore carriers has made it economically feasible to go far afield to obtain iron ore. For example, last year West Germany took one-sixth of their non-European imported ores from far distant Goa.
