But one doesn't find truth in a classroom by burning it down. Nor does one open one's mind by blocking school buildings to those who want to use them. Nor does one display academic freedom by substituting defiance for dissent, or destruction for debate. Now, it is obvious enough that the vast majority of students are not making those mistakes. But it is equally obvious -- if one looks at the matter closely -- that the vast majority of students are anxious to get more relevant answers to their questions. Students accept the view that the university is a good place to be introduced to the universe. But they aren't content with a simple handshake. They want to get to know their universe intimately. What is more, they want to change that universe -- at least that planet in the universe we currently find ourselves inhabiting. The student believe the world can be changed. And they are right. The students further believe the world ought to be changed. And they are right about that, too. The students even believe that they are the ones who bear a special responsibility for making those changes. And while they may be a trifle intolerant of those of us over 30 --and our responsibilities in the matter -- one can scarcely quarrel with their desire for a saner world than the one they believe we have built. -5-
