Show Page Five April 4, 1968 of the means at our command should attempt to reach our young people, approaching the discussions with patience, tolerance, and understanding, gaining their understanding of what is good in our way by explaining it in reasoned and positive terms, showing what is fallacious in their thinking with calm and cool logic and sufficient facts arrayed to support our position, and finally demonstrating to them a willingness to meet the unsolved problems with new and better approaches than we have tried in the past, matching their degree of concern. I know this may sound idealistic and certainly it will not be easy to do, bat we cannot afford to do nothing or to continue to do just what we are doing. If we persist in this course, the youth of today will increasingly consider that their chance for participating in the solution of problems in their area of concern lies through government rather than through the private sector and that the private enterprise system as we know it doday is an inadequate tool for the tasks at hand. This is a conclusion on their part that we cannot afford to let happen and it need not happen if we move toward them. We cannot afford to consider the Establishment a private club nor let them convert it to an isolation ward. It's got to be a YMCA. |
