Remarks by E. W. Littlefield before Industry Panel Wyoming Governors Conference on Uranium. 11/1/68 It is a great pleasure for me to be with you today at this first Wyoming Governors Conference on Uranium. Indeed, when I look back over the years since the early 1950's and consider the attrition rate in the uranium industry, I cannot help but think that we should all consider ourselves fortunate to be attending this meeting today. Recently I came across a booklet published in 1954 by one of the leading investment firms in Salt Lake City entitled: THE ORIGINAL URANIUM DIGEST, Facts and Figures On The Uranium Mining Industry, Special Situations for the Discriminating Investor. My copy of this publication may be the only one in existence, and I am sure this is the hope of the principals of the investment banking firm that published it. It lists for consideration 130 companies--not bad for an industry then only about five years old. Only five of those 130 companies are in existence today, and only two are engaged in the production of yellow cake. The degree of discrimination demanded of the investor was very great indeed! There is a lesson here. For if all of us assembled here today are to have the opportunity of meeting again in future years, we must use our best efforts to avoid a repeat of the boom and bust cycle that has prevailed in the industry in the past.
