With the growing awareness by enlightened management of its responsibilities to support the universities, I have no fear of the answer As a social institution the modern business corporation has made possible the abundance that allows a large segment of our population the leisure to learn and to teach, to explore the unknown, to ponder. Such leisure has been the ingredient of every great civilization but earlier civilizations acquired it through conquest and slavery of others, and their process carried with it the seeds of destruction. Certainly our way-- with the university and the business corporation mutually dependent upon each other in pursuit of the common good -- is the better and more permanent way. Working together -- each sensitive to and appreciative of the other's role, each recognizing that we need each other, I am confident that we can and we will produce a better civilization than man has ever known, that today's aspirations can become tomorrow's realities. That is why corporations should support private universities --to keep the corporation relevant to the innermost needs of man himself. Thank you, and good afternoon. END -13-
