Show with 6 on the Westinghouse Board and 2 on the General Motors Board. The average service of the outside Directors on the G. E. Board is presently 10 years. Assuming the existing Directors continue to serve on the Board until the "inside" Directors are 65 and the "outside" Directors 71, the average length of service for the Directors will be over 22 years. This leads me to my next point which is the splendid relationship that exists between the General Electric Board and its management. I believe that this is in part true because, more than half of the present Board elected Fred Borch and Flip Phillippe to the offices they now occupy. Assuming Fred and Flip serve until they are 65, over half of the existing Board will elect their successors. This is not true on any other outside board on which I serve. It is an uncommon but a highly desirable condition, for the election of the principal officers is truly the Board's most im-portant function and it is highly desirable that the Directors be in office long enough to understand the needs of the company as well as to be exposed to those coming up in management so that they may have a carefully formulated opinion of their abilities to quality for the top spots. Here again is another of the special strengths of the General Electric Board, which is the carefully calculated exposure of the Directors to operating management below the ranks of the President and the Chairman of the Board.
