Starting in 1968 Utah Construction & Mining Co. plans to commence shipments from its holdings in Central Queensland to supply the Japanese steel industry with 13. 5 million tons of coal over ten years. Within four years Australia's coal exports should about double and the annual value of such exports could reach 100 million dollars. Certainly the story of the search for oil and iron ore highlights both the hazards and the opportunities that characterize mining in Australia, whose vast areas are still largely untested, but where the cost of the hunting license comes high and the cost of getting any game that is bagged to market may come even higher. Many a mineral deposit will be discovered in Australia and remain undeveloped for many years because the cost of development will prove too high for a profitable venture under existing conditions. The size of Australia's population and its modest industrial base limit the size of its domestic market. This fact is recognized by the Australian government, which encourages export, but not of raw materials alone. It also has as one of its objectives the development of mineral exports in the form of beneficiated and refined products, metals and manufactured goods. Given the limitations of the domestic market, it has been necessary for new large mining developments to look overseas for the disposition of their products.
