Show 1. SCHOOL WILL SOON OBSERVE PARENTS' DAY Patrons Invited To Visit Institution and Meet Teachers OGDEN HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Emily Merrill, Editor; Blaine Larsen, Associate Editor Parents, November 7 is your op¬portunity to get acquainted with Ogden High school teachers. Take advantage of it. This day is set aside as "Parents' day." The aim of this "get-together" is to impress on the parents what Og¬den High is accomplishing in school work and school activities. If your boy or girl is not progressing satis¬factorily in school, you should talk to Mr. Merrill and the teachers and discuss with them the weakness in¬dicated. You parents who have children that seem to understand and quick¬ly attain their school work come and see just how they accomplish It. In this way you can make con¬tacts With the teachers, get their viewpoints and understand the child better by knowing the teacher. Your presence will lend encour¬agement to improve school work. AN ILLITERATE'S DIARY Nov. 1—I don't beeleve in mixing in things but about this time of year poloticians ar choosin there planks for some platform. They talk of shortnin the laboring ours and stuff, but it's funny no one thinks of shortin the skool ours. I'll bet if some one wood take that stand they'd get plenty of suport, at least from the stoodents. I herd to guys talkin today an one sez, "Why do you say i was to blame when i had the right of way when that man ran into me?" the other fello sez. "On account of his fath¬er's mayor; his brother is chief of police; and i'm engaged to his sis¬ter." And that shows how import¬ant polatics realy is. Some peeple get all the brakes. This week there are some swell shows and we have to go to skool, and last weak there wasn't one in town and we had a holiday. O, well, only one more day of studie left this week. SPANISH III PERIOD Second-year Spanish class has been very interesting of late. Or Friday, October 17, we were enter-tained by Miss Margarette Pratt of this school, who has spent many years in Mexico. She gave us a few new facts about that country. Our only regret was that the period was not longer. On Thursday, October 24, Miss Ruth Williams sang Spanish songs and related a few incidents that happened in Mexico. Both pro¬grams were thoroughly enjoyed by the class. Election of officers was held re¬cently. Those elected to serve a term of six weeks were: President, Virginia Tracy; vice president, Law¬rence Harrop; secretary and treas¬urer, Francis Barret, and reporter, Parley Jensen—Parley Jensen, re¬porter. SECOND STRING WINS Ogden's second string team partly avenged the 14-0 defeat rendered their first team at the hands of Box Elder by journeying to Brig- ham City Monday, last, and defeat¬ing Box Elder's second team, 7-0. Ragged playing characterized the actions of both teams. Box Elder seemed especially strong on end runs, while Ogden gained constant¬ly on power plays. Pat Quinn, late in the second period, on an off- tackle smash broke loose and ran 60 yards for the only touchdown. Miller plunged through the line for the point as the half ended. The second half saw Ogden satisfied to maintain their lead, while Box El-der filled the air with passes in an effort to even the score. The de¬fense of both teams was working well and neither team scored. The Ogden and Box Elder situa¬tion becames more interesting wher it is noticed that the Ogden second stringers always manage to out- score the Box Elder second team but when the first teams meet, Box Elder always finishes the game or the long end of the score—Frantzen Todd. USE LEISURE HOURS In this day and age we students have much leisure time on our hands, although perhaps, we do not realize this fact. There is much time after school that is not spent entirely on home work in which we might attain many accomplish¬ments. Value these hours, as well as those at school, as money—far too precious to lose. The old adage, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop," is very true. In young, idle minds first begin the thoughts of misdeeds and crime. Do not let your mind be idle. When your leisure hours come around, put them to work on something useful. Develop a hobby horse, and feed and care for it day after day. Choose for your hobby something in which you are interested; then put your heart and mind into it and rejoice when it has become a part of you. Reading is one of the most com¬mon and helpful hobbies in the world. Educate yourself by reading and enjoy it, too.—E. C. FAMOUS SAYINGS Miss Marquart: Now, boys and girls, take your assignment books. Willis Smith: I don't want to go into detail but— Miss Franke: Quiet, please, while I call the roll. Mr. Robbins: Oh, piffle! (believe it or not). Marjorie Hatch: Silence reigned but no one got wet. 2. LOAD CAN BE LIGHTENED BY WILLINGNESS Talk With Teacher Leads To Elimination of Misunderstanding OGDEN HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Emily Merrill. Editor; Blaine Larsen, Associate Editor. Teachers are as a rule good natured, broadminded, progressive people. Many times through my own misunderstanding I have at first thought some teachers to be narrow-minded, naggish and obsti¬nate. However, after I have had a talk with the teacher, I have found that it is my own obstinacy and ignorance that has caused the trouble. Most teachers are co-op¬erative and are willing to help a mystified student. However, when a pupil is sullen, tactiturn and un¬willing to seek the teacher's help, he cannot, certainly, expect a teacher to help him, especially when the teacher has probably two or three hundred more students a day to in¬struct. It is then the duty of every stu¬dent to do his utmost to under¬stand, co-operate with, and respect his teachers. In this way a student can lessen both his and his teach¬er's burdens. STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT Ogden High school has been very fortunate this year in getting such an excellent student body president. With other faithful students, he has spent much time and worked exceptionally hard to get the school to function properly and to create a friendly feeling among the many new members of the school. Dick, regardless of the amount of work that is before him, is always of a kind and friendly nature. He can be in a playful mood, but when the time comes for business, Dick is always ready. This fact has been proved many times by the way he conducts assemblies and meetings. Dick is intelligent, and has won¬derful personality, knows all the laws of the school and follows them, and participates in many of the student activities. I think you will agree with me when I say that Dick has all the qualities which are needed to make a good student body president. Bob Vance. O. H. S. INVITES Ogden High announces parents' day to be held at this school No¬vember 7. Parents and friends are urged to visit school during the day, attend classes, see laboratory students at work, hear student dis-cussions and, in general, get into the spirit of old Ogden High. If possible, have your lunch at the school cafeteria and tay the full day. The student body and faculty welcome you. We will speak later of a special program Wednesday evening which is now being pre¬pared. Set aside this day, Novem¬ber 7, as a special one and accept our invitation to visit High school.
