Show PATROLLING THE SPORT HIGHWAY With AL WARDEN GIVE HIM THE REINS DON BARNEY, handsome mentor at the Central junior high school for the past seven years, steps into a new pair of brogans at Ogden high school with the opening of school next September. The veteran junior high mentor has made a grand record at Central and should do well at the Tiger lair. Just 19 years ago this fall Ogden High won her last state champion¬ship in football. Bill Glasmann, Glen Dee, Louis Falck and others were members of that colorful team. In the years that have passed since that time the Tigers have had few outstanding teams. Perhaps the two - year rule for students has hampered the brand of football played by the Tigers. Perhaps the changes in coaches has been a handicap. And while on the subject there are perhaps many other rea-sons. This pencil pusher hopes that Barney will receive a free reign and have full power to act in football matters at the senior high school. Surely Ogden, the second city in Utah, should have a contender for honors in all forms of sports. Cham¬pionships to many are secondary sportsmanship being the big goal. But championships are sweet, make no mistake about that. In the past there has been en¬tirely too much meddling by "in¬terested" persons within the school, with the athletic policies and the coaches, to obtain championship re¬sults. It is not the writer's intention that scholarship should be subjugated to athletics. Neither does the writer believe that athletics should be com¬pletely dominated by scholastic work. The ideal situation would be a nice balance between the two with full realization given to the import-ance of each. No coach can succeed without the entire support of his faculty and the student body even if he has good teams. Barney, a good coach, is no excep¬tion. The new Tiger mentor is en¬titled to the whole hearted support of faculty and student body if the Orange Streaks are to be taken out of the doldrums in football. Coaches of the past few years have not had the most satisfactory co-operation to produce results. BARNEY |
