Show CITY WINNERS SELECTED IN ESSAY SERIES County Results Delayed By Unexpected Flood of Manuscripts Fourteen winners of the junior chamber of commerce essay contest in the schools of Ogden were an-nounced today by Porter T. Robbins, committee chairman. Winners of the contest conducted m the county schools by the junior chamber will be announced Satur¬day. L. Griffin, general chairman, said delay resulted from the un¬expected number of papers sub-mitted by contestants, totalling more than 700. Invitations will be formally ex¬tended to all winners to be guests of the junior chamber of commerce at a patriotic meeting February 20, at which time the awards will be made. Winners in the Ogden schools are: Group E, seventh and eighth grades—1st Mary Stuart, 7-B grade, Lorin Farr school, $3; 2nd, Marjorie Malan, 8th grade, Polk school, $2; 3rd, Palmena Poce, 7th grade, Mound Fort Jr. High, $1; 4th, Helen Farrell, 7th grade, Madison school, $1; 5th, Glen Wright, 7th grade, Washington Jr. High, $1. Group F, ninth and tenth grades —1st, Earl Johns, 10th grade, Mound Fort Jr. High, $4; 2nd, Homer Olsen, 10th grade, Central Jr. High, $2; 3rd, Marie Koss, 9th grade, Central Jr. High, $1; 4th, Netta Lavin, 9th grade, Central Jr. High, $1. Dinner Precedes School Accolade Dance On Friday Preceding the Ogden High school Accolade dance on Friday evening, Miss Dorothy Dean Hoggan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoggan, entertained at a dinner party at Dick's cafe. Corsages and buttonnaires were used for favors. The guests included Jane Davis, Clara Young, Dixie Scowcroft, Henrietta Curtright, Marge Boyle, Ruth LaVin Cragun, Dorothy Hall, Jack Doone, Francis Madsen. Roy Peck, Fred Nantker, Mark Bowers, Angus Folkman, Dick Baxter and Gene Hawkes. Accolade Pretty Event of Girls Friday Evening One of the most outstanding events of the week was the Acco¬lade annual dance given by the Girls' association of the Ogden High school Friday evening at the Berthana ballroom. About three hundred fifty cou¬ples swayed back and forth as they glided in and out under the different colored lights of the at¬tractive ballroom to the strains of the fascinating music. This dance was under the supervision of Miss Mary Woolley and the various of¬ficers and committees of the ossociation. The officers and committee chairmen who assisted in making the affair a success, were the Misses Lois Ensign, president; Dorothy Hall, vice-president; Darhle Jones, secretary; Idonna Pickett, general chaiman; Virginia McNamara, tickets; Pattie Doherty, advertising; Phyllis Brown, program; Helen Abbott, refresh¬ments; Ruth Sessions, invitations, and Edna Riley, date committee. Miss Maren Eccles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Eccles, en¬tertained a few friends at her home after the Accolade. Miss Eloise McKay, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William M. McKay, and Miss Alice Barton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Barton, en¬tertained a few friends previous to the Accolade dance at the home of Miss McKay. The decorations were orange and yellow flowers. The guests included the Misses Joanne Smith, Elaine Jones, Ruth Greenwell, Betty Hopkins, and Messrs. Harold Wheeler, Don Wheelwright, Pearce Wheelwright, Bill Barrett, Carlyle Savage and George DeHaan. O. H. S. Pupils Play In All-Star Orchestra Miss Katherine Morrell, violinist, and Miss Martha Zinn, violist, stu¬dents of Ogden High school, had the honor this week of being chosen to play in the all-star high school orchestra at the Northwest Music conference in Boise. Present at the conference were music educators from Utah, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Superior musicians were selected from more than 50 schools to make up the orchestra which was organ¬ized and directed by George Dasch, conductor of the Chicago Little Symphony orchestra. |
