He is living there at present for the purpose of making the jungle lands productive and to better the habits and living conditions of the native people. Don Felipe has three servants, Claudio, Maria de la Cruz and their beau¬tiful daughter, Francisca. Guillermo, a native peon and in love with Francisca, is extremely elated on having been appointed as a servant to the new mayor of San Fernando, Vladimiro Pineda. He tries to persuade Francisca to come and be his now but she scorns his offer as she is madly in love with Felipe. General Mendoza and Colonel Von Schweikhart, two faithful friends of Felipe, come to warn him against Pineda who is very cunning and avaricious, Pineda compelled the govenor of Colombia to send him as mayor to San Fernando on account of the trouble caused by the Squatters, under the leader-ship of Escobar, who believes that Mr. Bennett has stolen their lands. Felipe is visited by his fiancee Gladys Hampton who is accompanied by her aunt Deborah Clark. Pineda, on seeing Francisca, becomes madly infatuated and determines to possess her at any cost. Francisca, however refuses to go with him and when he tries to force her Felipe intervenes and orders him from the house. ACT II Because of jealousy Gladys shows contempt and hate for Francisca and finally makes Felipe promise he will return home with her. Guillermo warns Francisca that Pineda has the whole population drunk and is incensing them against Felipe. Pineda learns that Felipe has six thousand dollars secreted in the house for the purpose of buying cattle. He therefore attempts a loan but when Felipe refuses him the money without security, Pineda arrests him on the petty charge of possession of a rifle without a permit. Heavy guards are placed over Felipe. Francisca, blaming herself and fearing for the safety of Felipe, borrows a canoe from Guillermo and promises she will be his if she returns, Felipe rushes to her rescue but is forced to remain by Escobar. ACT III Escobar spies the canoe in the river and his men overturn it. Francisca is supposedly drowned. Pineda, infuriated at the news of Francisca's death, arouses Escobar to such an extent that Escobar is on the verge of killing Felipe when Francisca returns and convinces him that Pineda is a criminal and a thief. Escobar then seeks his own revenge by killing Pineda and thus unites the two great lovers of this drama. Felipe and Francisca. |
