Robert Vogeler, a communist prisoner for 17 months of despair, said last night in Ogden, America can end the war in Korea, win the minds of men, and bring about total collapse of the Soviety Union without a third world war. We must unite with what is left of the free world and actively combat communism from within. We must hold out hope for the millions who are enslaved behind the iron curtain. A businessman who spent a great deal of time in Europe before his imprisonment, Vogeler said the United States must beat Russia at her own game. He said an economic boycott against the USSR by this nation and its allies would be tremendously effective. Why should be supply Russia the wherewithal to kill our young men in Korea? Urges Sanctions. The speaker, first on the Weber college lecture series, advocated, diplomatic sanctions against the communists. It has been four weeks since the American ambassador was expelled from Russia. Why dont we dismiss the Soviet ambassador, he demanded. Since World War II America has lost immense prestige, Vogeler said, because it accepted humiliation after humiliation at communist hands with only mild protests. Quiet spoken restrained and intense, Vogeler painted in vivid verbal detail his arrest on trumped up charges in November of 1949, the barbaric treatment that followed and his ultimate 60 page confession after 72 days of incredibly brutal treatment. Vogeler talked in a calm, steady tone, rarely raising his voice. He licked his lips frequently and worked his mouth a great deal as ne recollecting painful experiences in the extreme. In simple, narrative syle, he told how the liberating Russian soon inched their way to power at the price of individual freedoms enslaving 800 million people and 19 nations in the end.
