Show Early State Representative Ogden Standard April 4 52 To Observe 91st BirthdayAndrew Philip Sorensen, said to be the first representative of the first state legislature of Utah, will be honored on his 91st birthday Sunday.Relatives and friends are invited to an open house at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Jacob Klea Mower Kapp, 4060 Riverdale road between 3 and 6 p. m.Mr. Sorensen was born April 4, 1861, in Lendenbro, Denmark. His family crossed the plains to Utah by ox team in 1863. He graduated from the University of Deseret in 1885.While teaching school in Bluff, Utah, he met Mary Alice Hammond. They were married Aug. 28, 1889, in the L. D. S. Logan temple. She died April 21, 1948. Held Many OfficesIn San Juan, he held the position of county attorney, county recorder, superintendent of schools and justice of the peace. He was the first representative to the first state legislature of Utah.After returning from this position the family moved to Grand county where he was elected as the representative to the second Utah state legislature. While in this position he introduced and had passed what is believed to be the first bill for an appropriation from the state for the improvement of roads and bridges in Utah.Positions he held in Grand county include assistant county attorney, county assessor, member of the town board, commissioner for two years and chief probation officer for six years. Active Church MemberMr. Sorensen has been an active member of the L. D. S. church. At the age of 14 he was president of his Deacons quorum and since thatAndrew Philip Sorensentime served many years as a teacher in the Sunday school and priesthood quorums. He served in several bishoprics and as superintendent Df the Y. M. M. I. A. He and his wife were ordained temple workers for 12 years.He taught in many Utah schools.He has five sons and two daughters, Philip H., Mrs. Alice Mower and Ivan C. Sorensen, Ogden; Frank C. Sorensen, South Dakota; Howard D. Sorensen, Taylor; Mrs. Marie Adamson, Salt Lake City, and Jack H. Sorensen, Logan. He has 31 grandchildren and 51 greatgrandchildren. |
