In view of the great interest Americans are showing in Canadas remarkable economic strength and stability, the following paragraph from The Canadian Letter by Robertson and Morgan is enlightening. Canada is the only major nation of the western world which writes its budgets in black ink. (It could, for example, pay for completion of the St. Lawrence seaways navigation acilities out of the current fiscal years surplus.) Canada was the only member of the grand alliance of World War No. 2 which refused to accept lend lease. In addition to paying its own bills it actually gave away more ordnance and food in dollar terms per capita than the United States did. It is now the only member of NATO which is paying cash on the barrel head for its military purchases in the United States and, in addition, is sending equipment overseas to its allies as gifts. (The arming by Canada of Belgian, Dutch and Italian divisions is a case in point. Nobody has been sent an invoice.) Because of its abundance of natural resources in timber, minerals, fish, farm products and cheap hydroelectric power to drive its greatly expanding industry, the Canadian economy in 1952 is the healthiest in the western world. In a day when the worlds story runs largely to nations which need economic help, it is pleasant to read about our strong neighbor, Canada, which, thanks to its resources including the human, needs no help but on the contrary is able, like the US, to help others.
