The observation is inspired by new and old evidence that Washington was deeply hurt by the ferocious attacks made upon his actions and his character in the closing years of his public service.James Truslaw Adams writes that no president, not even Roosevelt or Wilson, has been more bitterly assailed than Washington in his second term. Washington himself protested that his opposition cried against him as they would against a mad dog, their comments couched in such exaggerated and indecent terms as could scarcely be applied to a Nero, a notorious defaulter, or even to a common pickpocket.It is said that republics are notoriously ungrateful and peoples are inclined to tire of their greatest men, and there is much evidence to be gathered in support of his thesis, but it is also true that the American people have warm second thoughts about their great men and that eventually they are able to appraise them accurately and sympathetically. The trouble is that under this system of delayed appreciation there is always danger that the bouquets will be delivered after the recipient has lost the ability to enjoy their fragrance.
