Show Barney Will Serve As Grid Coach At Ogden High Shakeup Is Made By School Heads; Conroy Advances Spring Football Work Is Scheduled Soon At Ogden High DONALD BARNEY, for the past seven years athletic director at Central Junior High school, will serve as football coach at Ogden High school during the 1935-1936 season, W. Karl Hopkins, superin¬tendent of Ogden City schools an¬nounced today. Barney succeeds Ernie Simkin, former Univer¬sity of Utah football star, as gridiron mentor. Simkin will serve at Lewis junior high school along with Cliff Doxey commencing in September, Supt. Hopkins states. Maurice Con¬roy, sports director at Wash¬ington Junior, will replace Don Barney at Cen¬tral Junior High school. Conroy captained the Rocky mountain championship Utah State football team of 1921. Bill Stratford, former Utah Uni¬versity tennis star, will assist Con¬roy at Central. Harold Welch will remain at Washington as an assistant. At Mound Fort the coaching situation will remain unchanged with Keith Wangsgaard in charge assisted by Bill O'Connor. FINE RECORD Barney's football teams at Central since 1928 have won 36 games, lost four and tied twice. In track ath-letics Barney's charges have cap¬tured the city championship six years in a row. Central, under Barney, has won two baseball titles and three cham¬pionships in basketball. Prior to enrolling in the Ogden City school system Barney directed athletics at Midvale Junior high and prior to that time was in charge of athletics at Cedar City Junior high. Some of the greatest athletes of the present day received their early training under the veteran Barney. A list of the sports greats follow: Bill Kinner, all-conference center in basketball at Utah; Porkey Greenwell, sprinter, Utah University; Frank LaComb, all-around athlete B, Y. U., Leonard Higgins, Oregon State; Brutus Woods, track, basket¬ball and football star; Arlington Spillsbury, boxer; Phil Revell, Adam Bengoschea, Charles Norton and Pat Demming of the 1935 Ogden High basketball team and many others. Dixon Kapple will remain at Og¬den High school as director of ath¬letics. Barney will direct football and track and Kapple will be in the drivers seat in basketball. Ogden High schools last state championship in football was an¬nexed in 1916. The Tigers have had some fine teams since that time but have lacked the polish to knock at the championship door. "Barney has made a fine record at Central," said W. Karl Hopkins today. "He is a splendid handler of young men. I'm sure he will de¬liver in his new position." PURACTICE SLATED Barney will call Tiger grid candi¬dates out for a short spring drill within the next two weeks. He will attend a coaching school in South¬ern California during the summer and will also be present at the Utah State coaching school at Logan in early June. "I'm thrilled at my new appoint¬ment," said Coach Barney today. "It will be a pleasure to work with Dick Kapple. I hope I can take the Tigers out of the doldrums in foot¬ball.
